Emergency
Preparedness
The class material
contains suggestions for building emergencies kits for the home
and car as well as a 'Go Bag' with supplies to help the Fire Department.
CERT class participants are encouraged to assemble their own bags.
The specific content depends upon one's personal situation including
family size, children, elderly, people with special needs and pets.
Alumni
often bring their bags to class as examples of what can be done.
The Torrance
Amateur Radio Association and other amateur radio organizations
provide emergency communication. A number alumni are ham radio
operators.
A number of
alumni have taken Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training at
El Camino College or have taken additional search and rescue training
from the RBFD.
There are many
internet resources on disaster preparedness.
At the federal
level, the Federal Emergency Management Agency
has earthquake
information as well as information
for all types of disasters. See the US Geological Survey
for earthquake
maps and an excellent
list of resources. The Ready.Gov
site has a wealth of information.
At the state
level, the California Office of Emergency Services
has general emergency
information and see the 'Preparedness and Training' link on
the left side. See the links under the 'Be
Prepared' column on the left
side of the California
Seismic Safety Commission website. The northern California
Association of Bay Area Governments has information
on earthquakes
and other hazards.
Other resources.
See the 'Preparedness'
link on the left side of the American Red Cross website. The Laurel,
Maryland CERT site has information on 'go
bags' and making
shelter.
