SEARCH AND RESCUE DRILL August, 2003
August 2nd, 2003 – Search & Rescue drill run by Captain Whitaker, Captain Martinez, Fire Engineer Buckner, Fire Paramedic Dipane & Firefighter Herrera
Rescue incidents involve removal and treatment of victims from situations involving natural elements structural collapse, elevation differences or any other situations not considered to be an extrication incident.Equipment needed: Gloves, Glasses, Helmet, Flash Lights, Radios, Cell Phone, Whistle & Stick.
 
 
PART I: Start with the outside of the building: Type, size, occupancy, age, bars on doors or windows, condition of structure, leaning, on off foundation, water damage, fire damage or on fire, etc … Note: Collapse Zone = 1 ½ times the height of the building 
 
First
• Look for smoke.
• Look for areas with voids if collapsed.
• Live wires what to do. Don't move them if possible, if not pull not push, one span for safety.
• Smells, what to do, what they mean, natural gas, sewer gas, propane, butane.
• Water, shut off if leaking, or liquefaction.
• Sounds, victims, creaking, alarms.
• Look in driveways, toys=kids, look for clues, types of cars, etc…
 
Enter building:
Work in pairs of two minimum
Call out and listen for responses
Mark doors on entry lone side of an X Tag line optional
Left to Right, Right to Left
Mark as you go if large house
Room by room, closets, bathrooms, under beds, etc
Upstairs, downstairs, basements
Stop from time to time, call out and listen

PART II: Cribbing and Rescuing a trapped victim
Communication is the key to any successful rescue!
Remember to use simple commands and to speak clearly.
